Bagel Shops - Explore Ohio - Cutler Real Estate

It's always a treat to enjoy a breakfast bagel, but there's no better day than January 15, which is designated as National Bagel Day. This beloved carb comes in enough varieties to please anyone, and when you eat it with your favorite schmear or in a sandwich, you'll have an endless combination of choices.

Check out the following 9 places to have a bagel for breakfast in Ohio.

Northeast Ohio

Bialy's Bagels

2267 Warrensville Center Rd., University Heights, OH 44118

Bialy's Bagels has served the University Heights area since 1966, becoming an Eastside institution. They're even been named to Thrillist's list of "The Best Bagel Shops in America that Aren't in New York." The site praised the quality of the shop's New York-style bagels as well as its dedication to simply providing an excellent bagel. You'll find no toppings or other frills. Order your choice from a long list of bagel types, including roasted garlic salt, smoked sea salt rosemary, apple cinnamon, and pumpernickel. True to its name, the shop also makes bialys, which are a sort of cousin to bagels. It has a round, depressed middle filled with cooked onion, and unlike a bagel, which is baked after it's boiled, a bialy is just baked.

The Cleveland Bagel Co.

7501 Carnegie Ave., Cleveland, OH 44103

At The Cleveland Bagel Co., you'll have your choice of several types of hand-rolled bagels that are made fresh every day. Go with plain for a traditional flavor, or pep it up by choosing rosemary with sea salt or cinnamon cranberry. Top off your bagel with a plain schmear, brie honey walnut, chorizo chipotle, or another flavor. And if you have a bigger appetite, bagel sandwiches are also served, including one with local free-range eggs and American cheese and a classic lox version with house-made lox, a plain schmear, red onion, and capers.

D&R Bagels

33567 Aurora Rd., Solon, OH 44139

Bagels are hand-rolled, kettle boiled, and baked fresh on-premises daily at D&R Bagels. They have plenty of varieties, and if you'd like to try a mixture of flavors, check out the shop's mini bagels. Treat yourself to your favorites such as cinnamon crunch, sun-dried tomato, chocolate chip, jalapeno, and more. Or stop by in the morning to grab a breakfast bagel or two with fillings such as egg and ham, bacon, sausage, pastrami, or corned beef. If you live nearby, you can even have your bagels delivered.

Columbus

The Lox Bagel Shop

772 N. High St. #106, Columbus, OH 43215

Located in the heart of the short north, The Lox Bagel Shop hand rolls, boils, and bakes its bagels using the highest quality ingredients. Enjoy them with a spread like beet and thyme, woodhouse vegan, or artichokes, or choose fancy jam from Prospect Jam. Co. in Cincinnati. When you're in the mood for more, order a bagel sandwich that comes stuffed with generous portions of filling. They're available for breakfast in varieties including The Lox, served with capers, onion, and cucumber along with an optional egg, or the Southwest, with egg, cheese, salsa, avocado, and optional pork. At lunch, The Pastrami (with mustard, pickled onion, and Swiss), is popular, as is the egg or tuna salad.

Block's Bagels

3012 E. Broad St., Columbus, OH 43209

Block's Bagels was opened in 1967 by two New York City transplants who couldn't find a bagel in Columbus that met their standards. They serve breakfast all day, so you can order breakfast sandwiches served on a bagel whenever you'd like. Customer favorites include the egg and swiss with corned beef as well as the egg and pepper jack with jalapenos and pastrami. For a lighter treat, try a bagel with your choice of cream cheese and a topping such as strawberry, garlic spice, or lox.

Nate's Steamed Bagels

3058 W. Broad St., Columbus, OH 43204

A pop-up located inside Third Way Cafe's coffee shop, Nate's Steamed Bagels uses a machine to precisely steam and cook bagel sandwiches. It allows the flavor of the bagel, protein, and cheeses to blend together perfectly before cold toppings and homemade sauces are added. For breakfast, order The Ride, which has an everything bagel along with egg, fresh spinach, cheddar, avocado, and tomato, and with Green Goddess sauce on the side. For brunch or lunch, try The Italian Stallion, which comes with an everything bagel, salami, pepperoni, ham, onion, banana peppers, provolone, and lettuce, with parmesan peppercorn sauce on the side.

Cincinnati

Bagel Brothers

347 Calhoun St., Cincinnati, OH 45219

For the past 29 years, Bagel Brothers has been family-owned and operated across the street from the University of Cincinnati. They not only bake their bagels every morning, the shop's owners and employees also make their cream cheeses on-site using fresh ingredients with no additives or preservatives. Chicken, tuna, and egg salads are also made from scratch, and you can enjoy these on a bagel sandwich. Choose your bagel flavor as well as a cream cheese flavor such as apple cinnamon, French onion, jalapeno, or cheddar.

The Bagelry

1401 Walnut St., Cincinnati, OH 45202

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Bagelry (@bagelrycincy)

Located in Over the Rhine, The Bagelry makes its bagels fresh daily, starting by selecting the right ingredients and giving the bagels an overnight rise to let their flavors develop. From there, the bagels are hand-rolled and kettle-boiled to achieve a crispy exterior, chewy interior, and delicious flavor. Grab a single bagel like asiago, blueberry, or cinnamon raisin, and add a cream cheese flavor like roasted veggie, natural strawberry, or bacon scallion. If you'd like to take some home or to work to share, the shop offers a Brunch Bundle consisting of 12 bagels of your choice along with two tubs of cream cheese. The bagel sandwiches are also popular, including the Avocado Bagel Toast (with sliced avocado, onion, tomato, sea salt, lemon juice, and red pepper flakes) as well as the Smoked Turkey Club (with Lucius Q smoked turkey, bacon scallion cream cheese, lettuce, onion, and tomato).

Bagel Stop Sandwich & Catering

201 E. 5th St. Unit 11, Cincinnati, OH 45202

Choose your favorite combinations of bagels and spreads at Bagel Stop Sandwich & Catering, which is located in First Financial Tower. Bagel options include whole wheat, everything, and sesame, while spreads offered range from classic cream cheese to cinnamon butter or jelly. Or try a bagel sandwich that's customizable with your favorite toppings, cheeses, and sauces. Favorites include the roasted turkey breast with your choice of veggies and dressing, or an all-white-meat chicken salad made with celery, pecans, and cranberries.

You Knead a Bagel!

Where will you start your day with a yummy breakfast bagel in Northeast Ohio, Columbus, or Cincinnati?

Ohio Explored

Florida and California may have year-round sunshine, but nothing compares to the four seasons of beauty found in Ohio. The natural wonders found in the photos on Ohio Explored include a rainbow over Lakewood, a cascading waterfall at Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and a "tunnel" of trees in Sugarcreek MetroPark. Mother Nature's drama is on display during a stormy day at the Clifton Mill and a water spout hovering over Lake Erie. Since beauty can be found in several diverse places, there are also shots of ice cream cones, cookies, and coffee mugs.

Experience Columbus

As the state capital and home of Ohio State University, Columbus is a huge draw. Experience Columbus is full of images showcasing the people, places, and activities that make up this dynamic city. Pictures celebrate outdoor murals, local sports teams, the downtown skyline, historic architecture, and scenic parks, to name just a few subjects.

614 Magazine

614 is, of course, the area code for Columbus. It's also the title of a lifestyle magazine covering all things Columbus, from news and civic affairs to food and drink to arts and music. Their lively Instagram account features information about special events such as Restaurant Week, What? Music and Arts Festival, and Columbus Brewing's recent pop-up market. If you spend any time at all on social media, chances are you've seen the irresistible articles from Only in Your State. This site takes a deep dive into the unique features of each state, promoting the fascinating but little-known attractions that are off the beaten path. Only in Ohio is their account devoted exclusively to the charms of the Buckeye State. Marvel at a glowing full moon above Mile Long Pier in Lorain, step down into Old Man's Cave at Hocking Hills State Park and follow the boardwalk in Brown's Lake Bog near Wooster. Visit Cincy

How many cities have a footprint that spans three states? The Cincinnati region extends from Ohio into Kentucky and Indiana, making it a great jumping-off spot to explore as well as a vibrant destination in its own right. Visit Cincy is the Instagram account of the Cincinnati Convention and Visitors Bureau, so you can be sure they have the lowdown of all the points of interest. Did you know Cincinnati is home to the most extensive living mural ever created? What is the backstory of downtown's iconic Tyler Davidson Fountain, also known as the Genius of Water? These are only a couple of the fun facts you'll learn when you follow this account.

Ohio Magazine

According to Ohio Magazine, life in the Buckeye State is all about "beauty, adventure, and fun." The Instagram account is an offshoot of the popular publication documenting these aspects of Ohio for more than 40 years. Their photos continue the same theme, sometimes capturing all three features in one image. Recent posts include the Home for the Holidays tree lighting in Delaware, "A Christmas Carol" at Cleveland's Playhouse Square, and a flashback to the memorable OSU-Michigan "Snow Bowl" in 1950. Be sure to click on the link to their bio, which features a directory of links on a wide range of categories such as Best Hometowns, Road Trips, Famous Ohio Foods, and Ohio's Great Outdoors.

Destination Cleveland

Ohio's second-largest city, situated on the shores of Lake Erie, certainly merits its own Instagram account. Destination Cleveland, maintained by the convention and visitors bureau, covers every inch of the area, from downtown and the neighborhoods to the suburbs and outlying region. In December, the site is doing a small business "Advent calendar" highlighting a different dining or retail option each day. These types of posts focus on Cleveland's identity as a fast-paced urban center, but you'll also be delighted at the spectacular scenery in many of the photos.

Columbus Bakeries for Brownies - Cutler Real Estate

December is a month full of holidays, and one that you won't want to miss is Brownie Day! It's happening on Wednesday, December 8th this year, and it's the perfect reason to sink your teeth into one of those chewy, chocolatey delights. Making your own brownies is certainly an option, but there are also some amazing Columbus bakeries where you can pick up a few pre-made treats.

Mrs. Turbo's Cookies

178 W. Olentangy Street, Powell, OH 43065

They may have named their shop after their cookies, but they make great brownies, too. Mrs. Turbo's is the place to visit if you find yourself north of Columbus near Powell. They rotate their brownie selection often, so there's always something different to try. Popular flavors include S'mores, Peppermint Patty, and Coconut. The Buckeye Brownies are also delicious!

The brownies at Mrs. Turbo's are quite traditional. They're halfway between cake-like and fudgy, and they just might remind you of the brownies your mom baked at home.

Chocolate Cafe

1855 Northwest Blvd., Columbus, OH 43212

If you need a reason to stop by a place called Chocolate Cafe, Brownie Day can be that reason! This bakery crafts a wide assortment of tasty treats, many of which are gooey and chocolatey. Their Assorted Brownies are a customer favorite. They're sold by the dozen and come in a variety of flavors, including Salted Caramel Pretzel and Double Fudge.

While you're in Chocolate Cafe, you may want to order a cocktail to go with your brownies. The Chocolate Cake Martini and Double Espresso Martini both pair well with chocolate. Since this space does operate as a full-service cafe, they also have a menu of sandwiches, salads, and soups.

Happy Little Treats

1203 N. High Street, Columbus, OH 43201

It's impossible not to be happy at a place called Happy Little Treats, especially if you're there to celebrate Brownie Day. This small bakery takes pride in their creativity. They always have colorful cookies and delectable donuts in their glass display cases. Their brownies are massive, and they make them both with and without pecans. Sometimes they even carry Oreo and blueberry brownies. You could easily buy one to share with a friend or family member — or eat it all yourself.

Happy Little Treats is a vegan bake shop, but even non-vegans rave about their products. They also have a coffee menu with plant-based options like their famous iced oat milk latte. If you're looking for something to bring home for breakfast the next day, try the vegan honey buns. They're as gooey and delicious as brownies.

Brownie Points, Inc.

5712 Westbourne Ave., Columbus, OH 43213

Brownie Points was created by two sisters-in-law who are Ohio natives. The company started in their apartment kitchen and eventually moved to a brick-and-mortar store in Cleveland before relocating to Columbus. Since 1991, their brownies have brought smiles to countless faces. They've even begun shipping their brownies across the country.

At Brownie Points, they don't just have brownies. They have brownies in all different flavors and forms. The Chocolate Caramel Sea Salt is a fan favorite. If you like fruity flavors, then you may want to try the Raspberry Caramel Fudge. Not in the mood for chocolate? You're in luck! Brownie Points even has some non-chocolate flavors, like Very Vanilla and Butterscotch Sensations.

Cherbourg Bakery

547 S. Drexel Ave., Bexley, OH 43209

If you're on the east side of Columbus near Bexley, this is a great place to get your brownie fix. Cherbourg Bakery is a nut-free, gluten-free, and dye-free facility, aiming to make baked goods as safe as possible for their customers. But have no fear — even without these ingredients, their baked goods are incredible. The Espresso Brownies are mouthwatering if you're someone who loves coffee.

In addition to brownies and other sweet treats, Cherbourg Bakery offers a lot of savory baked goods. You may want to pick up an olive oil mini loaf or a 3-cheese quiche to bring home for later.

The Fat Girl Bakery

1347 Cameron Ave., Lewis Center, OH, 43035

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Amy Hall (@thefatgirlbakery)

Located inside the Oak Creek Center, The Fat Girl Bakery is a fun and laid-back place to indulge your inner chocolate lover. The owner, Amy, considers herself an expert in flavors, and she has lots of fun pairing them together in new and unique ways. Their Buckeye Brownies bring peanut butter and chocolate together for a fun twist on the Ohio tradition.

The Fat Girl Bakery is known for its friendly staff and welcoming environment. While some people do take their treats to-go, staying to enjoy your brownie in-house is definitely encouraged.

Insomnia Cookies

2209 N. High Street, Columbus, OH 43201

Insomnia Cookies made a name for themselves by delivering cookies to college campuses late at night. But you don't have to be a college student to enjoy their baked goods, and you no longer have to stick with cookies, either. They now have brownies, cookie cakes, and even ice cream if you visit them on-site.

Of course, if you really don't want to leave the house, you can have Insomnia Cookies deliver some cookies and brownies to your home for Brownie Day. Placing an order via their website is simple, and they'll get cookies to you in no time.

Bake Me Happy

106 E. Moler St., Columbus, OH 43207

If you eat a gluten-free diet, then Bake Me Happy is a great place to get your brownie fix. This is a 100% gluten-free bakery. They specialize in nostalgic baked goods. So, as you browse their menu, you will notice gluten-free versions of classics like Zebra Cakes and SnoBalls. Don't worry — they do, in fact, offer a gluten-free version of colorful Cosmic Brownies, which are perfect for Brownie Day.

If you dine in, make sure you pair your brownie with a nostalgic beverage, too. The Cereal Milk Cold Brew is uniquely incredible, and guests also love the Strawberry Nesquick Cold Brew. The flavors will remind you of simpler times.

Where Will You Get Your Brownie Fix?

In this busy holiday season, don't forget to celebrate Brownie Day! Where will you sink your teeth into chocolatey goodness?

Supper Clubs - Explore Ohio - Cutler Real Estate

Does the term "supper club" conjure up visions of exclusive restaurants where Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack caroused over steaks and martinis? In reality, Midwest supper clubs offer fine dining and socializing in a more widely accessible setting.

Here's a brief look at the history of this enduring American classic, along with a list of the best supper clubs around Northeast Ohio, Columbus, and Cincinnati.

History of Midwest Supper Clubs

Supper clubs are often associated with Los Angeles and New York City, but the Midwest is deep in their DNA. In fact, the first supper club was opened in Beverly Hills, CA by a native of Milwaukee.

In their heyday during the 1930s, supper clubs were meant to be an outing for an entire evening. Contemporary supper clubs are less formal but retain the emphasis on traditional meat-and-seafood menus and lively social interaction.

Music Box Supper Club

1148 Main Ave., Cleveland, OH 44113

Located in the iconic Flats of downtown Cleveland, Music Box Supper Club is truly a one-stop entertainment venue. Downstairs, guests dine on a menu of short ribs, fresh seafood, and other favorites prepared with some Caribbean flair. Upstairs is the concert hall that has hosted noted musical acts such as John Hiatt, Rufus Wainwright, the Smithereens, and Lucinda Williams. The supper club opens at 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday. From Monday through Wednesday, dining is available only for concerts and other events.

Asterisk Supper Club

14 N. State St., Westerville, OH 43081

As indicated by its slogan, "Exclusive - but Inclusive," Asterisk Supper Club aims to make elegant dining accessible to all. In addition to lunch and dinner of comfort food favorites, Asterisk offers traditional high tea daily from noon - 4 p.m. Sip on your choice of tea while nibbling on scones, sandwiches, and other accompaniments. Westerville was once known as the "Dry Capital of the World," but today Asterisk serves an assortment of classic and craft cocktails. Hours are noon - 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, noon - 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon - 8 p.m. Sunday.

Oak Park Tavern

2919 State Route 430, Mansfield, OH 44903

While steak is a mainstay on the menu of most supper clubs, Oak Park Tavern is also known for its signature Lake Erie yellow perch. Sit at the bar and watch as your meal is prepared in the open kitchen. If you prefer a different view, relax outside on the all-season patio. Oak Park Tavern is open 3 - 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 3 - 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Ampersand Asian Supper Club
